In The Solitude of Cotton Fields | La MamaIn this world when somebody wants something from someone, it's all about how much they truly want it.

Dimly lit with a shadowy soundtrack and shady mysterious characters, writer Bernard Maria Koltes takes us into the shadows of that place between places. A non-place some seek, some avoid and others find themselves deep within its depths even when they intended to steer clear.

This surprisingly complex two-hander features Tom Dent and Rob Meldrum under the veteran guidance of director Richard Murphet, who lure us into this dark world with conviction.

With no set, simple lighting and sound, it's all about the language and characters within this somewhat challenging text.

A consistently powerful force to behold on stage, Meldrum portrays The Client, a character that seems to value his own integrity above all else. Caught up in the barbed wire of what is right, when and where it is right to do it and of course why it is right for it to be or not be done.

A complex brooding character, The Dealer played by Dent is engaging to watch throughout. Wielding all the tools of his trade ruthlessly in a fierce assault. Dent shows a genuine wanting so strong that you seriously question who the client is.

A challenging work executed by a very capable ensemble.

However earnest and inarguably lovely it is to look at, the pedestrian sexual indulgence and relationship traumas of New York 'A' gays penned 9 years ago doesn't feel particularly urgent.
